Paneveggio Forest, in the Val di Fiemme among the Dolomites of northern Italy, is known as the Forest of Violins. The Norway spruce grown here produces the highest quality of resonant wood used for violins and other stringed instruments. From Stradivarius onwards, the greatest luthiers (violin makers) have selected their wood from these forests.
