Osceola (1804-1838), who was also known as Billy Powell, became a leader of the Seminoles in Florida. Osceola was of Creek, Scots-Irish, and English heritage. During the Second Seminole War, Osceola led a band of Seminoles against the U.S. troops who were carrying out an order to remove them from their lands. The image dates to 1898.
