The Empire State Building with gold lights at night unusual view seen framed by trees. The Empire State Building, an office tower designed in the art deco style by architect William Lamb of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, was built during the depression from 1930 to 1931. At just over 1453 feet, 443 meters high, it was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1931 and remained the world's tallest building until the first of the World Trade Towers was completed in 1972. It has 102 floors and after the tragic destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001 is now the tallest building in NYC. New York is known as "the Empire State." EDITORIAL USE ONLY.
