During his long life he inspired generations of artists. He received the National Medal of the Arts from President Obama in 2011 & in 2012 France awarded him the insignia of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. Image taken December 10th, 1998 at the Pace Gallery in New York City at the inauguration of an exhibit honoring the Centennial of the American Academy of Arts & Letters.
