According to Islamic beliefs, in Paradise there are two mighty trees, and at the foot of each is a fountain of the purest water. In this miniature by al Hariri, an Arabian scholar of Arabic language and literature and a government official who lived in the 13th century A.D., one tree and fountain are shown. Muslims do not portray the facial features of the Prophet Muhammad and so he is shown here with his face covered by a veil. Also portrayed here, with their faces covered each by a veil, are Ali, Muhammad's cousin and fourth successor to the caliphate, and Ali's sons Hassan and Hussein.
