Lange's photo was taken inside a pea-pickers camp at Nipomo Mesa, off US Highway 101 in California. The woman in the photo is Florence Owens Thompson (1903-1983) whose identity was only discovered in the 1970s. The children are at left, Ruby then aged 5, Katherine then aged 4 and baby Norma just seen at lower right.
