Merodach is the Biblical Hebrew name for the Mesopotamian deity Marduk, the patron god of Babylon. In this illustration Merodach is seen advancing in his chariot to fight Tiamat, the dragon of the primordial sea and one of the deities seeking to wrest power in a civil war among the gods. Merodach had challenged Tiamat to a single combat, which Merodach wins.
