The town of Tours whose name comes from the ancient Gallic tribe called the Turones, is located at the junction of the Loire and the Cher Rivers. The region around Tours, is known for its wines, the perfection of its local spoken French, and for the famous Battle of Tours in 732. These timber framed houses in the heart of the city date from the XIV-XVI centuries. To make it easier to appreciate the old town, its streets have now been pedestrianised and cafes and restaurants abound.
