Marinol 2.5 mg pill. A pharmaceutical product, Marinol, is widely available through prescription. Marinol (dronabinol) is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. Dronabinol is also used to treat loss of appetite and weight loss in people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Dronabinol is in a class of medications called cannabinoids. It works by affecting the area of the brain that controls nausea, vomiting, and appetite. Unlike smoked marijuana, which contains more than 400 different chemicals, including most of the hazardous chemicals found in tobacco smoke, Marinol has been studied and approved by the medical community and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Marinol is only prescribed to people who have severe conditions, and who have not responded adequately to other treatments for their symptoms. People who take Marinol may experience some of the pleasurable effects of regular recreational marijuana, including elation and euphoria, as well as some of the unpleasant effects, including paranoia and unusual thoughts, upset stomach, and drowsiness.
