Lutheran religious refugees, fleeing Salzburg, Austria. Over a century of religious tolerance was reversed by Catholic Archbishop, Leopold Anton von Firmian, who ordered the deportation of Protestants from Salzburg in 1731. Over 20,000 were expelled, the majority being welcomed into Prussia by King Frederick William I. Many sought new lives in North America as well.
