The ancient city of Merv, located in the Karakum dessert in modern Turkmenistan was once one of the most important trading centres on the ancient Silk Road. Its location is of immense strategic importance and has hence been the site of many cities throughout history. During the twelfth century Merv is said to have been the largest city in the world and is now a world heritage site.
