By 1830, nine mills used the fast flowing water of Alva Burn to power their machines. Dams and lades were built to ensure that there was enough water throughout the year. Longannet Coal Fired Power Station, which can be seen in the distance now supplies electrical power. Although no mills now use water as a power resource the area is a popular route with walkers.
