In 1990, The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust was set up, with the intention of constructing a brand new Peppercorn A1 Pacific. After nineteen years, in 2008, locomotive, No. 60163 Tornado, moved under its own power for the first time. It is operated on the Network Rail main line by DB Cargo. In February 2017, Tornado was used by Northern Rail on scheduled public timetabled services between Appleby and Skipton prior to the reopening of the Settle–Carlisle line, which had been closed for a year because of a landslip.
