New York, NY 20 July  2013 - Summer heatwave, where temperatures have exceeded 90º farenheit, ( 33º Centigrade ) for the past week, children frolic in the fountain in Washington Square Park.   On Thursday, electricity usage fell just short of an all-time high - 13,161 megawatts were used by 5 p.m., just 28 megawats fewer than a record set on July 22, 2011, Con Edison said, which lead to power outages on Staten Island. City officials urged New Yorkers to avoid exercising outdoors, drink plenty of water and check on any elderly neighbors.
