Glyn Rhonwy quarries behind Llanberis where the Quarry Battery Company plan to develop a pump storage power station. Situated close to the village of Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon, the Glyn Rhonwy quarries, which have been dormant since 1930, were used during World War 2 as a munition storage area and a munition dump post war. The munitions were removed by the Bomb Disposal Squad by the mid 1970's and various schemes proposed to utilise the redundant quarries. The scheme proposed by the Quarry Battery Company is to store water in the upper quarries which can be used to generate electricity during peak demand and pumped back using off-peak or surplus power during off-peak periods.
