Franz Boas (July 9, 1858 - December 21, 1942) was a German American anthropologist. A pioneer of modern anthropology, he has been called the "Father of American Anthropology". Here, Boas is in the studio at Minden posing as an Inuit awaiting the return of the seal to the blowhole.
