As the '57-58 season drew to a dramatic finale, Charlton were on the brink of an instant return to the first division. The battle for promotion had see-sawed between them, West Ham United, Liverpool, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers. Charlton went into the last game of the season in blistering form after a 5-1 away demolition of Rotherham, a 4-1 home win over Notts County and a 4-1 stuffing of Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
