(dpa) - Angela Merkel, Chairwoman of the German CDU party, Bernhard Vogel, Prime Minister of the state of Thuringia, French President Jacques Chirac, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Max Adenauer, the son of the former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and Philippe de Gaulle, the son of the former French President Charles de Gaulle (from L) all shake hands during the unveiling of the Adenauer-de-Gaulle Monument on the grounds of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (Foundation) in Berlin, 23 January 2003. Standing on the left behind Vogel is Peter Mueller, the Prime Minister of the state Saarland. The monument pays tribute to the 'fathers of the Elysee Treaty' which celebrated its 40th anniversary. The relief shows Adenauer (R) and De Gaulle shaking hands. The two statesmen laid the foundation of the German-French friendship after World War II and after a long standing enmity between the two nations.
