The fighter squadron was awarded the name Moelders on 22 November 1973 which was the 32nd anniversary of the death of Colonel Werner Moelders. The squadron 74 is one of four more squadrons 'Richthofen', 'Boelcke', 'Immelmann' and 'Steinhoff' which carry well known names. As a part of NATO's rapid reaction force the squadron has two Mc Donnell Douglas Phantom F-4F Phantom II around the clock on standby all year.
