Contemporary World War One illustration of British Generals preparing for a "Big Push". It depicts the Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Douglas Haig and his leading Generals - Sir Hubert Gough and Sir Henry Rawlinson on his right, Sir Henry Horne and Sir Herbert Plumer on his left. On the table is a map of Western Flanders and Haig is engrossed in strategic plans for the Third Battle of Ypres (July 31 - November 6 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele). The battle was one of the major engagements of the war. The sketch, by an unknown artist, appeared in The War Illustrated periodical in August 1917.
