Commissioned by Pietro Francesco Mele, the Italian photographer and Knight of Malta, who arranged the sittings in the Convent of San Anselmo. The picture painted in Rome in 1982-1983 is the first of three official portraits Durand painted of his holiness. The picture commemorates HH Dalai Lama's first audience with HH John Paul I,I which occurred on the day of the first sitting in the cloistered garden of San Anselmo. Six monks attend his Holiness (two background centre) and two Benedictine monks one carrying a vase of gladioli.Durand is the first artist to whom His Holiness granted sittings.
