Considered one of the most original of Carnaval celebrations in Portugal, the Carnaval de Lazarim takes place in a small village called Lazarim located near the town of Lamego in the Douro region of central Portugal. Villagers dress up in costumes and old clothing and don carved wooden masks, many of them bizarre and quite grotesque. It's an ancient Portuguese festival that is Pagan in origin.
