The carved head of the Buddha entwined in the roots of a banyan tree in the grounds of Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya. One of the most recognizable and photographed images of Thailand, no one knows exactly how this came to be. One theory suggests that the tree grew around the carving when the temple was left abandoned after the invasion of Ayutthaya by the Burmese army in 1767.
