Staithes was once one of the largest fishing ports on the north east coast, as well as an important source of minerals such as jet, iron, alum and potash. Today, the village with its quaint cottages nestled between towering cliffs is an attractive holiday destination set on the dramatic Yorkshire Coast within the North York Moors National Park. A lot of the buildings here have at least 3 floors in order to maximize floor space using the smallest footprint. In a place like this, flat building land was at a premium. This is a view of the High Street in the old part of the village. This cobbled lane runs down to the quayside at Seaton Garth. Here we are looking towards the harbour area, with the Royal George Inn, to the left.
