Photographed with the permission of the British Museum. Notice to editors: The image may be reproduced and published as a composite part of a news story, article and critical review of the exhibition/museum only. Death mask of Napoleon. Plaster of Paris cast. Napoleon died on St Helena on 7 May 1821 after several weeks of painful decline. The cause of his death is still disputed. As with so much of Napoleon’s story, there are many conflicting accounts of the making of his death mask and it’s subsequent history. Only a small number of casts were taken from the original mould, and this is a second, or perhaps third generation cast. Its acquisition by the British Museum is not recorded, but it is thought to have been here from the 1830s.
