View over fields looking towards Wharfe and high above, Moughton Scar. Wharfe is a hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, situated about a mile north east of the village of Austwick, North Yorkshire, England. This hamlet is the only settlement in Crummackdale (the upper valley of Austwick Beck). Moughton Scar rises immediately behind the hamlet to a height of 1,400 ft (430 m). A limestone pavement can be found here. The geology of the Yorkshire Dales is predominantly of limestone, which gives rise to many spectacular natural features such as 'limestone pavements.' These are plateaus of bare, weathered rock originally formed by the scouring action of glaciers during the last ice age.
