The bells which chime the quarter hour in the Great Clock at the Houses of Parliament were being temporarily suspended for routine maintenance work. Palace of Wesminster authorities said the chimes were likely to be suspended for short periods between 9am and 5pm. The hour bell, Big Ben which often gives its name to the whole of the Great Clock will not be affected.
