Every year in late autumn thousands of starlings return to roost under the pier at Aberystwyth. Each evening as the sun sets, the birds return in small groups, gradually merging until there are tens of thousands of birds swirling or murmurating over the pier and promenade. The spectacle draws a regular crowd of local people who watch and some travel from further afield. The end of the pier is part of a bar on the pier and often someone will emerge wearing a hi-vis jacket in an attempt to deter the birds from settling on the railings. The various weather conditions and cloud formations make this an ever changing natural spectacle of an urban starling murmuration. In mid to late spring the birds disappear overnight.
