The Morenci Southern Railway was a narrow gauge ( 36 inch ) line built in 1901 to connect the town of Morenci with the Arizona & New Mexico Railway at Guthrie, a distance of about 18 miles. The line was noted for its 5 loops between the San Francisco River and the town of Morenci. With the consolidation of the mines in the district, the lower section which includes this bridge was abandoned in 1922. With the expansion of the mine at Morenci, the upper section no longer exists, nor does the old town of Morenci.
