The Akureyrarkirkja was designed by Gudjon Samuelsson and contains stained glass windows celebrating a number of people from Icelandic history. Gudbrandur Thorlaksson (1541–1627) was an Icelandic bishop, mathematician and cartographer. He produced the first good map of Iceland in 1590 and is also notable for having edited and published a number of books, including the Bible in Icelandic.
