The city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, one of the world's most violent urban areas, sponsered a group quinceañera for some 150 girls from low-income families who otherwise could not have afforded the ceremony. A quiceañera is a rite-of-passage ritual for many 15 year-old girls in Latin American countries, similar to a 'sweet sixteen' or debutante coming-out party in the US. After the Catholic Mass, the city held a party with live music for the girls at the local convention center.
