The book is placed for members of the public to read and features details of men and women from the parish of Ashprington, Devon that served during the First World War.
RM2H4A17H–The 'Shot at Dawn' memorial at the National Memorial Arbouretum, Staffordshire, UK. A statue of a young British soldier represents Private Herbert Burden, one of the men shot at dawn in the First World War for breaking the rules. Today we understand that many of those executed were probably suffering from combat stress. This was known as 'Shell Shock' by 1917, but was not really understood until more recently. The statue was sculpted by Andy DeComyn. Wooden stakes stand in a semi circle containing names of some of those killed in this way.
