A dike of lava in Cathedral Valley of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. Dikes are formed when lava forces its way upward into cracks in overlying rock, and cools. The lava here is 30 to 20 million years old; the red Entrada Formation into which it has intruded is about 150 million years old.
