The Church of St. George or Bete Giyorgis is a monolithic church. It is the most well known and the last to be built of the twelve churches in the Lalibela area and has been referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lalibela is known around the world for its 12 monolithic rock-cut churches assembled in four groups. Most are thought to have been built during the reign of Lalibela, namely during the 12th and 13th centuries.
