This was from one of several cases of rifles abandoned in the back of an Iraqi truck on Route 801, the road to Umm Qasr in north-east Kuwait. All manner of weapons were abandoned across Kuwait, in trucks and other vehicles and were often strewn in boxes along the highway as the Iraqi Army fled northwards in disarray, attacked by coalition aircraft. After Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, coalition forces were quick to send their armies to both defend Saudi Arabia and to successfully oust the Iraqi forces by the end of February 1991.
