The Hercules is the workhorse of the RAF transport fleet, primarily intended for tactical operations such as troop-carrying and supply dropping. It can operate from short, unprepared runways and can mount long-range strategic lifts when required. After Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, coalition forces were quick to send their armies to both defend Saudi Arabia and to successfully oust the Iraqi forces by the end of February 1991.
