In 1993, eight teens were killed by police in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the crime became known as "the slaughter of the Candelaria". A walk organized by the Movement Candelaria led the mothers and relatives of the victims to the streets to protest against police violence and honor the victims of the massacre.
