Standing Scholar (Prophet?) Turned to the Right (Recto); Standing Scholar (Prophet?) Turned to the Left (Verso), ca. 1460–70, Germany, Middle Rhine, Pen and carbon black ink, traces of black chalk underdrawing, on paper prepared with sanguine wash, 7 11/16 x 3 9/16 in. (19.5 x 9.1 cm), Drawings, Germany, Middle Rhine (ca. 1460–1470), This standing male figure and its verso counterpart have been variously given to the Fleming Hugo van der Goes (1435/40-1482), to an anonymous Netherlandish artist, or to a Burgundian master. Actually, the idiosyncratic draftsmanship is traceable to the Middle Rhine, and the paper is of German manufacture datable to the mid-1460s
