John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650–1722) an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. As a soldier, his most famous victory was at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, during the War of Spanish Succession. He was well rewarded with great wealth for his military exploits.
