St. Helens canal (originally the Sankey canal) next to Spike Island nature reserve and close to the locks connecting the canal to the River Mersey. The canal opened in 1757 and was formally closed in 1963 following the decline of its main trafiic of coal and raw sugar. Sections have been restored to a navigable standard but the reopening of the whole canal remains a long-term aim with significant obstacles.
