There is a legend told by the Ojibway people of the area that Nanibijou guarded the silver on Silver Island. However when the white man was told of the silver, the giant Nanibijou laid down and slept. A silver mine was made by the "white man", after hearing of the silver. The mine kept flooding and still today the island holds it's silver, while Nanibijou sleeps beside the island.
