Reflection on the boat of Staten Island. Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city, thanks to a ferry that connects the island of Manhattan to Staten Island. The boat ride , free and about 30 minutes away, offers a direct view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the lower part of the Big Apple . Staten Island is part of the City of New York since 1898. The population of the island ( which is considered the most conservative district ) has tried several times since independence in the 1980s because the people felt marginalized and underrepresented in municipal government . The most serious attempt came in 1993 , when the city was ruled by Mayor David Dinkins . Staten Island held a referendum for independence from New York. 65% of the population voted for separation, which was finally knocked down by the State Assembly of New York, without reaching a vote in the chamber.
