Prepared to turn out in review order at a moment's notice: men of the 1st Life Guards waiting at Albany Street Barracks in case there should be any public demonstration against the new king. The precaution was unnecessary, but it was interesting as being a survival of an old custom dating from days in which the death of a Sovereign only too often led to half a dozen desperate attempts to secure the throne.
