Prehistoric Thessaly; being some account of recent excavations and explorations in north-eastern Greece from Lake Kopais to the borders of Macedonia . absence of bases, the bottoms being onlyflattened, and the irregularity of the patterns. In the latter the followingpoints should be noted, the frequent introduction of rude spirals on eitherside of the handles, while the rest of the pattern is purely linear, and thepresence of a crossed circle on the bottom. The decoration is usually inhorizontal zones, but unfilled panels al.so occur. It is possible to determinefive main shapes: (a) Short, round-bodied pithoi with tapering necks, and small verticalribbon handles on the body. Below the handles the vase narrows in rapidlyto a small flattened bottom. In the complete example shown in Fig. 125the remarkable points of the pattern are its division into panels, and theplacing of spirals at the top of the vertical bands. Several fragments ofvases of this shape were found : all have a crossed circle on the bottom. The photographs have been retouched, as the patterns are indistinct.- Cf. restored pattern in Fig. 131a.
