Prawn trawler, Norman River, Karumba, c 1966. When the end of the whaling industry in the early 1960s, the CSIRO suggested the Gulf of Carpentaria could prove to be a good source of prawns. A survey of the Gulf was carried out between July 1963 and August 1965, finding large schools of banana prawns around 32 km offshore.
