Nsevoleia Tycheerected this monument in her lifetime for her freedmen andwomen, and for those of C. Munatius Faustus. The por-trait below is probably that of Neevoleia; the bas-relief issupposed to represent the dedication of the tomb. On oneside are the municipal magistrates, on the other the familyof Naevoleia; in the centre is alow altar, upon which a youthis placing some offering, and by it a cippus, which is torepresent the tomb. On the side next the triclinium is acurious bas-relief of a ship, which presents us with some. Bas-relief of Naevoleia Tyche. interesting particulars concerning the naval architecture ofthe Romans. The ends of the vessel are remarkable. Theprow is of singular shape, not clearly defined, and does notpresent the formidable beak of a ship of war : it is surmountedby a bust of Minerva. The poop ends in a swan or goosesneck (x^vto-Kos), from which there floats a flag: another flagis to be seen at the mast-head. The yard consists of twospars rudely lashed together. At the mast-head is somethingresembling a large block, in which ropes are fixed, whichMazois says are the halyards. In his engraving they lookmore like shrouds; and indeed a boy is making use of themas shrouds, and climbing up them. The crew consists ofchildren who are furling the sail.
