Photograph of John Edward William Samuels who was featured in Deeds That Thrill The Empire for his bravery during the Battle of Festubert in May 1915 for which he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM). He was killed in action on 29th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. His name appears on Thiepval Memorial in the Somme region of France. The historical volumes, the full title of which was, Deeds that Thrill the Empire,"True Stories of the Most Glorious Acts of Heroism of the Empire's Soldiers and Sailors during the Great War" were published shortly after the end of the conflict.
