These 18th century former almshouses were endowed by the will of George Painter, a Hull priest. Almshouses, also known as bede-houses, are provided for certain groups in a local community, particularly the poor and for widows of those of certain occupations. Originally formed as charitable extensions of the church system, they were later taken over by local officials and authorities.
