The Old Bridge Supports on the River Aire Near Snaith,This bridge was built mainly so that the bodies could be taken from Carlton to Snaith Priory church safely for burial Until then they were taken accross by boat and a few lost. It was built as a toll bridge until the iron bridge was built. When that bridge was repaired the old toll bridge (no longer a toll) was opened up again on a tempoary basis. If you go down Ferry Lane the tarmac road stops and in front of you are the stone pilings of the old bridge. On the other side of the river are the old toll houses. It is remarkable that this bridge could, if the will was there be put back again to span the river. 1776AD An Act of Parliament was passed to allow Thomas Stapleton of Carlton to build the Carlton Toll Bridge over the River Aire at a cost of £1,850
