An Indonesian police outpost and sign mark the turnoff from the Sekonyer River to the tributary, Sekonyer Kanan River, that leads to Camp Leakey. The light-coloured muddy water of the main Sekonyer River is polluted by mining operations upstream and contains heavy metals including mercury. The cleaner Sekonyer Kanan tributary water is naturally dark coloured because of dissolved organic matter and acids.
